The clang of metal and the hum of welding torches filled the air at Central Virginia Community College (CVCC) on Friday, April 25, as students and professionals from across the region came together for the 2025 Central Virginia Welding Wars. This high-energy event brought together talent, creativity, and career opportunity in one of the region’s most in-demand trades.

This year’s competition was made possible through a strong collaboration between CVCC, Campbell County, C&C Piping & Fabrication, the Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance, Southern Air, and the Central Virginia Workforce Development Board. Each organization is committed to growing awareness and excitement for careers in welding and skilled trades.

Welding Wars gives high school, college, and professional welders a chance to put their skills to the test through a series of real-world challenges. Dozens of regional employers attended, scouting talent and building connections with participants who may soon join their workforce. New for 2025, organizers introduced an Arcs & Artistry competition, an exciting addition that gave participants an opportunity to showcase their creativity through metal artwork. This new feature highlighted the intersection of skill and imagination in welding and fabrication, with impressive entries ranging from sculptural pieces to functional art that wowed attendees and judges alike.

Traci Blido, Executive Director of the Central Virginia Workforce Development Board, emphasized the importance of employer engagement. “Welding Wars gives companies the chance to see potential hires in action and make personal connections that go beyond a résumé. It’s about building a pipeline of talent, and we’re proud to be part of that effort.”

With entry-level welders in the region earning upwards of $22 per hour, the event served as a powerful reminder that high-demand, high-wage career paths exist right here in Central Virginia. For many students and job seekers, Welding Wars 2025 was more than a competition; it was the spark that could ignite a successful future.
