The Central Virginia Transportation Planning Organization (CVTPO), the federally designated metropolitan planning organization, has adopted the Connect Central Virginia 2050 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP).
The LRTP is the transportation blueprint that establishes transportation priorities and strategic direction for the greater Amherst, Bedford, and Campbell counties and Lynchburg City urbanized area.
Connect Central Virginia 2050 will inform transportation project investment recommendations to advance a regional multimodal transportation system – from roadways and transit to freight to pedestrian and bicycle accommodations – that will support the diverse needs of individuals and businesses. The LRTP will be used by local, state, and federal governments to guide transportation investment decision-making over the next 25 years, or through 2050.
The LRTP identifies a near-term (2026-2030), mid-term (2033-2039), and long-term (2040-2050) list of prioritized projects that will support identified transportation network goals. The fiscally constrained project list, or the list of projects that can reasonably be anticipated to be advanced from the approximate $1.3 billion estimated funding to be available to support new transportation improvements through 2050, can be found in Section 6.3 of the LRTP. Factors including safety, future growth, travel demands, land use, economic development, system reliability, coordination with locality plans, and anticipated funding were considered in project identification and scoring.
Connect Central Virginia 2050 was developed by the CVTPO in coordination with federal, state and local governments, transportation providers, community stakeholders, and the public. Funding for the LRTP was provided by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Federal Transit Administration (FTA), the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT), and the CVPDC, the fiscal agent of the CVTPO.
