October is National Pedestrian Safety Month. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) spearheads this effort each year to bring awareness to pedestrian safety issues. This year’s campaign is entitled “Everyone is a Pedestrian”, which reminds us of the shared responsibility amongst pedestrians and drivers to get everyone home safely.

The CVPDC puts safety at the forefront of all of our transportation planning and programming efforts. We encourage walking as a means of transportation, and prompt commuters to enter their walking trips into the ConnectingVA app to earn rewards and enroll in our emergency ride home program.

Throughout the month of October, we will be sharing information on our social media accounts to remind drivers to be aware of pedestrians, make sure they are not distracted while driving, and other ways they can keep pedestrians safe. Likewise, we will share tips for pedestrians to “See and Be Seen” by drivers, especially as it the number of daylight hours begins to decrease.
