Each year the Region 2000 Services Authority coordinates three Household Hazardous Waste and Electronic Recycling Days. These special days are set-up to facilitate and encourage responsible stewardship of our environment.
Additionally, these days provide an opportunity for residents of Lynchburg City, Amherst, Appomattox, Campbell, and Nelson Counties to dispose of hazardous waste materials and e-waste in a manner that keeps toxic materials from being disposed of in our landfill.
The first two HHW and Electronic Recycling days have proven to be very successful. Over 425 residents of our communities recycled household hazardous waste through this program and almost 385 residents recycled their electronic waste. Types of household hazardous waste most often brought to these events for proper recycling are used motor oil, oil-based paints, aerosols, and unused/unwanted outdoor lawn/garden chemicals. As one can imagine, these events also see a large quantity of older televisions, VCRs, and office electronics.
You may not know this, but in our great Commonwealth, each county, city, town or regional authority is required to establish recycling programs that would meet or exceed a recycling goal of 25% of its solid waste generation. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our entire community to making this a great place to live, the Region 2000’s recycling rate for 2016 was 35.7%!
Be sure to mark your calendars for the next HHW and Electronic Recycling Day schedule for October 14, 2017 from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Concord Turnpike Convenience Center, 2525 Concord Turnpike, Lynchburg, VA 24504.
