Don’t know much about transportation planning? Want to learn how your suggestions for transportation improvements could become a reality? The Region 2000 Local Government Council is finalizing the Rural Long-Range Transportation Plan (RLRTP) to the horizon year 2040 with the help of the Transportation Technical Committee, VDOT staff, and locality planners which answers those questions.

This transportation plan is specifically created for areas in Region 2000 that do not fall under the jurisdiction of the Central Virginia Metropolitan Planning Organization (CVMPO).

The RLRTP2040 is part of an ongoing initiative to create regional transportation plans in rural areas that complement those in Virginia’s metropolitan and small urban areas.  The RLRTP2040 looks at improvements that can be made in the near-term and in the future in order to assess the effects of population and employment growth upon the transportation system.

A significant addition incorporated into the updated RLRTP is the use of VDOT’s Project Prioritization Tool that was utilized for the evaluation of candidate projects to ensure compatibility with the Commonwealth Transportation Board’s current SMART SCALE funding mechanism. Applying the Project Prioritization Tool provides information that will aid in the recommendation of a prioritized list of projects for each county represented in the plan.

Each RLRTP is developed as a blueprint, or vision plan, to address all of the needs of the transportation system, regardless of anticipated funding availability.  This regional plan can then be used by local, regional, and state agencies to identify transportation funding priorities.
