Emergency Communication in the Lynchburg region has expanded its interoperability with the addition of Liberty University and Central Virginia Community College to the Region 2000 system.
First started in 1997, the Regional Radio Communication system links Amherst, Bedford, and Lynchburg emergency communications providers
on an 800 Mhz frequency that allows easy switching of communications between jurisdictions and sharing of towers and communications infrastructure equipment.
Over the years, several agencies and organizations have been added to the system such as the Blue Ridge Regional Jail, the Greater Lynchburg Transit Authority and the Region 2000 Services Authority. This spring Liberty University and the Central Virginia Community College joined the system to have greater interoperability and communication access.
Liberty Police Chief Richard Hickey commented, “This has been a long-anticipated change and upgrade in our communications. And, a great step in increasing our mutual response to emergencies.”
Melissa Foster, Lynchburg’s Emergency Services Director, said, “This is a great opportunity for us to continue to close that interoperability gap between the first responders for the City and the LUPD first responders.”
With the addition of Liberty and CVCC, the Region 2000 Radio system now supports over 2,900 radios and other communication devices serving Police, Fire, EMS, and Public Works users.
