With funding provided through a community development block grant from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development, Appomattox County continues to address unmet housing needs from the EF-3 tornado that struck the County in February 2016.
The Region 2000 LGC staff, who are providing consulting and grant management services, continue to work with the programs Project Management Team in prioritizing the uninsured and underinsured, and through this process, have identified and assisted five families with housing rehabilitation needs and identified three households whose needs will be met with the building of new homes. Not only addressing storm related damage, the Appomattox County Tornado Recovery Project may also address deficiencies in the home to make the home safe, sanitary and secure.
In addition to housing rehabilitation efforts, the project has also removed and discarded remaining stumps and wood waste from properties to restore such properties, as much as feasible, to pre-storm conditions. Also, the project has demolished one blight structure that were determined to be un-suitable for rehabilitation.
The County of Appomattox and Region 2000 LGC staff will continue these rehabilitation efforts until June 2018. For more information on this project contact Matt Perkins, Special Projects Manager, mperkins@region2000.org.
