Now in its second funding cycle, Virginia's SMARTSCALE program scores transportation projects based on an objective, outcome-based process that is transparent to the public and allows decision-makers to be held accountable to taxpayers. Once projects are scored and prioritized, the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) has the best information possible to select the right projects for funding.

Last fall, Region 2000 localities submitted a total of ten projects for SMARTSCALE funding. Following the vetting and scoring of all submitted projects from across the Commonwealth, VDOT staff presented a draft funding scenario to the CTB in January. This draft scenario includes funding for four of the ten submitted projects within Region 2000. These projects include:

  • Safety improvements to the intersection of U.S. 29 and Route 151. Applicant: County of Amherst ($195,489)
  • Improvements to Old Courthouse Road. Applicant: County of Appomattox ($11,546,256)
  • Construction of a roundabout at Patriot Place. Applicant: County of Bedford ($3,512,243)
  • Construction of a turn lane at the intersection of Route 811 and Route 622. Applicant: County of Bedford ($321,404)

The CTB will be discussing SMARTSCALE projects, the draft funding scenario, and any changes that may be necessary at its upcoming winter and spring meetings.
